SCHUYLKILL AVENUE ESPLANADE

For over 80 years, this sliver of elevated platform has remained an unrealized green space at the historic 30th St. Post Office. With the redevelopment of the building as offices for the Internal Revenue Service, the original intention of the space has now been realized. The Esplanade is a green passage, linking the ongoing redevelopment of the area that includes the Postal Lands and areas adjacent to 30th St. Station.

The Esplanade, an elevated roof deck over an interstate highway and Amtrak rail lines, with sweeping views up and down the Schuylkill River, sits dramatically across from the Center City Philadelphia skyline. With a dearth of green space available for the 4000 new office workers, the terrace is anticipated to be a highly sought-after outdoor venue throughout the day and evening hours. The terrace is separated into an upper and lower section, providing a variety of seating opportunities as well as a welcoming gateway to the developing district. The Esplanade is conceived as a space distinct from and complementary to the adjacent Porch at 30th Street Station, a highly programmed and active public space by the University City District.
