CONVERGENCE PLAYSCAPE

The Convergence is inspired by the natural lands of the Ozark Mountains of Northwest Arkansas. It tells the story of the influence of water on the landscape. Within the Convergence, water is expressed in several ways. The plaza water feature represents the multitude of springs that rise out of the ground, create their path, and disappear into unknown depths, only to re-emerge before dropping again through a hole in the floor. A winding stream provides opportunity for playing in the stream that so many of us grew up with.

As the water disappears again, the landscape begins to focus on a series of engaging experiences through the bottom of the ravine. With nearly sixty feet of elevation change across the site, particular attention to accessibility and slope aspect is considered for the safety and comfort of visitors. As one works lower into the ravine, the experiences, and their associated landscapes, are continually refined in granularity. A big boulder field at the top resolves in fine pebbles at the bottom. The noise of excited, playful children and traffic at the top of the ravine transforms into a quiet space that allows for listening to the quiet rustles of nature.

It includes moments of connection to the local natural world with representations of native Ozark salamanders and an opportunity to engage with the upper canopy of an oak tree. More than any regional attraction, the Convergence embraces it's locale and while unique, is also uniquely Ozarkian. Importantly, the project is inclusive of all visitors, regardless of age and physical ability.
